Watch the N97 being assembled

Nokia Conversations, Nokia's official but chatty blog has released a fantastic video (with some painful background music) showing the N97 being assembled, packed in boxes and put on trucks.

It's great fun to see it, and it's reassuring to watch the handsets being put together and shipped out, to somewhere!

Pre-Order the N97 for £499

It's been about a week now since Nokia's own online store in the UK started accepted orders for the Nokia N97.

The device is priced at an unsurprisingly hefty £499 although there is no release date mentioned.

If you want to be one of the first people to get your hands on this phone, then click here to order, but otherwise we'd advise waiting for more competitive Nokia N97 contract deals.

July Release for the Nokia N97 on Vodafone

Vodafone has created a new set of pages devoted to the N97, and excitingly they've confirmed on the site that it has a July release date.

The pages at Vodafone.co.uk invite you to sign up for email updates, and also look at the specification, photos and a 3D view of the Nokia N97.

With their powerful HSDPA network able to provide the speed to use the browsing capabilities of this handset successfully, so we're glad that Vodafone has already come out in some support of the device.

Vote for your favourite N97 Feature

Nokia Conversations, a community website by Nokia have started a poll for visitors to state what their favourite (most anticipated) feature of the Nokia N97 is.

It's not exactly clear why they're doing this, perhaps just to know what to focus their own marketing on, or maybe just to keep people excited about the features that the handset will offer.

So far, 31% have chosen the "All of the above" option with the interface elements of the touch screen and QWERTY keyboard following in 2nd and 3rd places. We'd agree, although perhaps the 32GB of internal memory, expandable up to 48GB, deserves to move up a few spots, as that's what really makes this a fantastic multi media device.

Digital Compass on the Nokia N97

We just saw an awesome preview video of our favourite mobile phone's digital compass feature.

We already knew that GPS on the N97 enables the device to find your location quickly on Nokia's own mapping software (or on Google Maps). But with most navigation devices, you need to start moving before the map will face the correct direction and you can tell which way is North on the ground, not just on the map.

And along comes the Nokia N97 with a digital compass, so that even when stationary, the phone will rotate the map so that it corresponds to the actual location of roads and sights of interest. This is a fantastic feature, especially for walking using the included mapping software.

O2 and Orange may not offer the N97

In February 2009, Nokia announced that it would be pre-installing the popular Skype VOIP application for making voice phone calls through the internet/data connection.

T-Mobile has supported the Skype application as does 3 who offer mobile phones with Skype like the 3 INQ1. However, O2 and Orange are reportedly outraged by the move which reduces their network to a data pipe to be customised by Nokia.

O2 and Orange may not stock the Nokia N97. O2 have said they are working with Nokia to find a solution but Orange (and Vodafone) have not made any official comment. We hope they sort this out, we really want the N97 available on every network.
